LESSON 1 ASSIGNMENT

Introduction

 

For the first assignment, you will develop an online collaborative environment to help you and your group members meet and make decisions for your project.  Specifically, you will create a Facebook Group and interact with group members using the group tools available.

 

The benefits of using an online collaboration environment like Facebook Groups include the ability to discuss projects anywhere you have an internet connection and anytime you have time to work on your projects.  Some features include commenting and replying on a discussion wall, adding photos, creating polls, creating events, adding and creating documents, adding links, and even video calling if needed.

 

This assignment will help you develop collaboration skills needed to do well on your Decades Project.

INSTRUCTIONS
  • Decide on a group role: In your group of three or four for this Decades Project, you will need to decide which roles to take for this assignment so that the work can be spread out equally.  You will be graded based on individual input to the group project.  Some roles may include Facilitator, Researcher, Recorder, Editor, and Expert.

  • Choose one of your group members to create a Facebook Group.  Please set the Privacy to Public to allow for grading.

  • Add a description that describes your project.

  • Make each group member an Admin after adding them to give them control of the Group content and activities.

  • Create at least one Group Event to keep track of meeting times and due dates.

  • Create a poll that asks for your group mates' input on collaboration tools (communication, document editing, presentation editing, etc.) you can use that can help improve your project.  You must come to a decision on at least one collaborative tool.

    • Example: Create a poll that asks your group mates to pick a preferred communication tool, select a tool from the poll, and then respond to the poll with a comment on why you think this communication tool will help your project collaboration efforts.  Debate the pros and cons of each tool and then make a decision to use at least one for group communications.  Some communication tools may include the Facebook Group wall, Facebook Messenger, email, texting, Skype, or Face-to-Face meetings.

  • Create a 1 to 2-page collaborative document to discuss the collaborative strategies your group has used and will use in completing the Decades Project.  You may use your Facebook Group to create a document in the Files tab, Google Docs, or another online document editing software.  You may color coordinate or add your name to your contribution if you wish.  Share the URL link to your Facebook Group wall when complete.  If you used Facebook Group's (+Create Doc) feature, then it will show up there.  Please address each of the areas below.

    • Group Roles: What are the group roles and who is filling each role?

    • Group Tools: Please include the collaboration tools your group decided to use in moving forward and your reasoning for choosing them based on collaborative needs. 

    • Research: What collaborative strategies work and do not work while completing group projects?  What strategies are you using in your group project that are working and are not working?

    • Continuous Improvement: How may your group improve its collaborative efforts? 

    • Works Cited: Please cite any sources in MLA format.

  • Then post your Facebook Group link to Discussion Thread below.

HELPFUL HINTS

Please submit the URL link to your Facebook Group in the discussion forum thread under the "Submit Here" section on this page next to this section.  You will need to sign into your Facebook account and leave the URL link as a comment.  Please see the Grading Rubric for more details.
